[00:00:00] Chris: Welcome back to another episode of Expat Rebel today, I’m going to share: Airbnb and says value over hotels, Cancun, violent taxis will lose their permits due to attacks on Uber. And be aware of some real estate scams. Also what is airplane mode really? And more Expat news.

[00:00:18] I created this podcast because I really believe that being an Expat is really not for everyone. And then a lot of the expat advice out there is unrealistic. So I’m delivering news, motivation and advice that will make you an excellent expat and enjoy a better life. And because I know you’re busy, I just won’t take up too much of your time. I hope this podcast gives you the support you need to become or be a better expat.

[00:00:44] And are you wanting to become an expert soon, then go grab our Expat Rebel guide to becoming an expat in 30 days over at ExpatRebel.com/30. And if you love what we’re doing, just please support us over at ExpatRebel.com/join. We’re a [00:01:00] community and we would love for you to join us. Now, let’s start todays episode.

[00:01:04] So what, what happens if you put your phone into airplane mode? I got an article and all these notes are in the show notes. That talks about exactly what happens technically which I think a lot of people understand that I almost use airplane mode almost every day on my phone. But what if you don’t and disobey the crew members instructions and it’s a federal offense. Some of the newer planes actually have no cell phone lights. That have placed the no smoking since you haven’t been able to smoke on a plane and eons. And if you disobey crew members instructions, your displayed lighted signs and posted placards. You could be charged with a couple of offensives. So nice article about that. If you’re having a problem with that.

[00:01:48] The CEO plays up, of Airbnb, plays up their value over hotels. I think last week I talked about how. A lot of people are going back to hotels because this service is a lot better.[00:02:00] A lot of Airbnb. At listed places are. Getting really not nice about checkout fees, cleaning fees, and some of them have you almost do a renovation on their place just to be able to leave practically. And he’s talking about, the CEO is talking about how they think their values in North America have gone down in the second quarter, the Airbnb prices. And how hotel pricing is on an upswing. Rising at an estimated 4% to 10% for the quarter. So he thinks that the Airbnb offers a better value proposition. Didn’t address the extra fees. A lot of these places are doing and some of the quality problems. I myself have gone to really using boutique hotels here in Mexico. I live full time in Mexico. And I just like the boutique [00:03:00] hotel experience, usually there’s like maybe eight rooms and the customer service at places I’ve stayed at had been just quite honestly phenomenal reminds me of, living and traveling like in the fifties. Eh, wasn’t around then, but just imagine seeing it from movies. Like how nice it can really be. So I tend to do that and only do Airbnb for really specific reasons.

[00:03:25] Next article I have in there is eight things I would never wear on a flight as a travel editor. At travel editor talked about things instead of, pants. A certain type of stretchy pants and certain types of shoes and things like that. Great article. If you travel a lot, I found a lot out of that.

[00:03:41] And Ecuadorian president candidate a was assassinated . This is a very long story. And isn’t good for Ecuador’s uptick in violence. A lot of expats are questioning if it’s safe enough there, lot of expats, haven’t had a problem and things like this happen where it really affects [00:04:00] certain very small regions within a country. And also amongst people that are fighting it out and tends to ignore expats, but because of this being a big deal, And a lot of people are starting to question Ecuador. And we’ll see how that goes down. Things change and ebb as they do quite a lot.

[00:04:24] Cancun, has it violent taxis will lose their permits due to attacks on Uber. Quintana Roo, the state government over there, and now some new reforms to their State mobility law. That would immediately withdraw taxi concessions from all the operators were involved in acts of violence against other platform or private service drivers. This has been a big issue. I traveled since I don’t drive with a private driver a lot, and even my favorite driver wants me to sit in the front. When we go into Quintana Roo. So that [00:05:00] we look normal and not like a hired thing, because they don’t know if you’re Uber or private or anything. And they’d been violent because they. Taxi drivers I’m talking about really do not want Uber or Uber, like service there whatsoever. And the state government is saying you’re going to have to get used to it. So they come out with this. Hopefully this will break down the and get rid of the violence and people that are behind some of these taxi drivers. By making this happen. To where, you can be a taxi, you can eat an Uber, it could be a private driver. It could be anything you want. All of this legal, of course there’s licenses for, all this type of thing. And And people have the choice. So hopefully that’s gonna happen.

[00:05:43] Hey in the world of athletics, just some news to show how cool some countries outside the US is, and in Canada, in Europe, the Mexico women’s team wins the silver medal in an archery world cup. But that [00:06:00] was really cool. And they won against the India.

[00:06:03] The stronger Mexico peso, which we’ve been having the last few. Months. Is a challenge for us, Mexico logistics. And yeah, so the Mexican near shoring. Wave has helped the manufacturing industry boom, across the country. And is strengthened to peso. AKA. My US dollars don’t go as far here as they used to. A lot of people are predicting that by end of the year, there’ll be back to where it was at. We don’t know, but right now our exchange rate is not great for us. And it’s not great for some industries in Mexico as well. So a lot of people aren’t real happy about this, including people in Mexico.

[00:06:47] Nice article explains all that gets a bit technical and economical. Go on. Not. Again, another article in English and Spanish about real estate scams. And there are, I’m seeing [00:07:00] it living here. I can see it. Do not buy anything over the internet and do not buy anything until you’ve seen it. I’ve seen some condos go up and the weirdest locations that I just don’t understand, like in front of a bunch of crocodiles on a swampy area or out in the middle of nowhere really far away from everything. And in fact, electricity hasn’t even been strung up there yet. And a lot of preconstruction can be good. And in fact, you can get some great deals pre-construction but they also, depending on the background of the people doing it and where it’s located, it can be something that may take 20 years before it did they actually finally finish it just because it’s so remote. So be careful, there’s an article in there that helps give you some tips on what to do, basically you here and anywhere, really outside the U S including the US to be honest. It’s all word of [00:08:00] mouth. So if you see something that internet, it may not be real. And if you get, like, when we bought our place here, our notary public. He was a lawyer. That does all the paperwork to buy a place was recommended by over three people only use this guy. Only use this guy. And and it was great. They did it. It was during the pandemic, in fact which made a little bit harder because some of the government offices were closed down and he was really trying to get his best to get this over and done with. As quickly as possible, it was an interesting process. To say the least. So a nice article in there. What to avoid? Always go see it. And ask around and get used to the market around the place to know whether this is really a good deal or not.

[00:08:49] Hey, Costa Rican surfer, made third in the US Open. So Hey, yay for some surfers out there, when you live in a country like Costa Rica, you’re going to be you’re going to [00:09:00] become a good surfer. So I was nice to. They finished at third at the 2023 US Open Surfing competition in Huntington beach. California.

[00:09:10] And a nice sweet article to end the podcast on is an ailing and baby hummingbirds were nursed to health at a woman’s apartment turn to clinic in Mexico city. It’s got a lots of great photos in there about a retired lady I’m living in a very nice place area, in Mexico city, helping out hummingbirds and what it meant for her going into retirement to have something to give back, to it. And I think, that really hits a lot of people. A lot of us expats are retired and i’m doing our thing and we want to be able to help our neighbors. Neighborhood and we want to do something meaningful and it was a really great story to inspire you to do that.
